Geographical Profile of Rajasthan

Location of Rajasthan - northwestern part of the Indian subcontinent

West and northwest of Rajasthan bordered by Pakistan

North and northeast of Rajasthan bounded by the states of Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh

East and southeast of Rajasthan bounded by the states of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh

Southwest of Rajasthan bounded by the state of Gujarat

It passes through its southern tip in the Banswara district.


Area of Rajasthan - 132,140 square miles (342,239 square kilometres).


The capital city is Jaipur.

In the western region of Rajasthan is the famous Thar Desert, which is also known as the Great Indian Desert. The land in this part is relatively dry and infertile.

Rajasthan’s southwestern part however is relatively wetter, more fertile and hilly.

Climate in Rajasthan

The state of Rajasthan has varied climate. It is different in different regions.

In Rajasthan the average winter temperatures range from 0° to 28° C (46° to 82° F), summers are very hot in many parts and the temperatures range from 25° to 46° C (77° to 115° F).

Average rainfall also varies in the state of Rajasthan
In the western deserts rainfall is about 100 mm (about 4 in) annually, while the southeastern part the average rainfall per annum is about 650 mm (26 in)
