Jaisalmer was established by Rao Jaisal in 1156. Jaisalmer is located in the arid plains of west Rajasthan in the midst of the huge Thar Desert. The environment of western Rajasthan is harsh, semi desert and obtains very little rainfall. Jaisalmer is also known as ‘Golden City’.The main source of water was Gadisar Lake. Its golden, sand-coloured fortifications rising out of the infertile Thar like a scene from the Arabian Nights.

PLACES TO VISIT IN JAISALMER

The fort is 1,500 ft (460 m) extended and 750 ft (230 m) ample and is built on a mount that rises on top of a height of 250 ft (76 m). The fort has an original drainage system called the ghut nali which permit for the easy drainage of rainwater away from the fort in all four directions of the fort.

PATWON-KI-HAVELI- This is the biggest Haveli in Jaisalmer and stands in a narrow street. The Patwon Ji ki Haveli is a motivating part of Architecture and is the mainly significant among the havelis in Jaisalmer. THE THAR HERITAGE MUSEUM- This is a great place for history fanatic who will love the artifacts preserved here. The museum also hosts a puppet show during evenings. This small but appealing museum is full of artifacts from the past period such as coins, manuscripts, photographs, weapons and old musical instruments.

GADISAR LAKE- Gadisar Lake is one of the most important tourist fascinations of Jaisalmer. Opposing to the popular faith, it is not an oasis but a water preservation tank completed around 1400 A.D. by the then maharaja of Jaisalmer, Maharwal Gadsi Singh. An attractive fact about this lake is that it’s never waterless (even though it’s in the middle of a desert) as it is fed by the Indira Gandhi Canal.

SAM SAND DUNES- There is a point in Thar Desert people go there for Desert Safari. That is why Sam sand dunes are becoming the major magnetism in Jaisalmer. In the month of February/March, this whole place turns into a cultural center. The desert festival organized among these dunes is the showcase of Rajasthani culture as a whole. Sam Sand Dunes Desert Camp also provides facilities of DJ every night with cultural show with snacks & bonfire.
