Chittorgarh - A historical marvel in the desert state of Rajasthan

Chittorgarh resonates with stories of Rajputana bravery, pride and passion. The bards of Rajasthan sing tales of courage and sacrifice recounting stories that are known to every child and adult in the city. Chittorgarh is named after its most imposing structure, the Chittorgarh Fort which stands atop a 180 metre high hill and is spread across 700 acres.

There are number of places in Rajasthan and Chittorgarh is one of the historical place which is must visit. It is known for the dazzling Chittorgarh Fort which will remind us of the architecture and Chivalry of the then Kings in Rajasthan. However there are other mesmerizing places in and around Chittorgarh which are less explored by the tourists. 



"The Chittorgarh Fort stands tall over a 180 meter high  hillock and spread over 700 acres".

NAGRI
Nagri is located about 20 Kms from Chittorgarh situated on the banks of river Bairach. Formerly known as Madhyamika, Nagri is one of the most important townships of the Mauryan era in Rajasthan.  

The place saw huge growth and flourished during the Maurya and Gupta eras. The excavations in Nagri have unearthed many exciting facts and have showed signs of strong Hindu and Buddhist influence.


BAROLO
It is located about 140 Kms from Chittorgarh in the Rawatbhata Tehsil. You can see numerous ancient temples here which include the ruins of the famous temples of babaroli.

BASSI WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
This wildlife sanctuary is located about 25 Km from Chittorgarh
The Bassi wildlife sanctuary is spread over 50 Square Kms near Bassi village in the Chittorgarh Tehsil. 

The main attractions of Bassi sanctuary are  panther,  wild boar, antelopes and mongoose. Bassi also attract Migratory birds.
If you are planning to go to Bassi then please note that in order to get the entry you need to get prior permission from the District Forst Officer, Chittaurgarh. 


SANWARIYA JI TEMPLE
Located on the Chittor-Udaipur Highway about 40 Kms from Chittaurgarh is the famous Sanwariya Ji Temple. This temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna.

MATRI KUNDIYA TEMPLE
About 45 Kms from Chittaurgarh is the famous Matri Kundiya Temple which is also known as the "Haridwar of Mewar". This shrine is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

BHAINSORGARH WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Yet another wildlife sanctuary located in the secluded and serene region, the Bhainsorgarh Sanctuary lies amidst lush green environment. You can also see precious archaeological remains here.

BIJAIPUR
You can also stay here now as this Castle is converted into a hotel. Bijapur fort is over 350 year old and was built by Rao Shakti Singh, the youngest brother of Maharana Pratap.

SITAMATA SANCTUARY
The sanctuary is located amidst lush green teak trees and is spread over the Aravali and Vindhyachal ranges in Rajasthan. The population of the Teak Trees is over 50% in Sitamata Sanctuary. Apart from this there are many other trees like salar, tendu, amla, bamboo and bel etc.

Another breathtaking view inside is of the three rivers that flow through the forests of Sitamata Sanctuary. There is a Dam as well on Jakham river. 

You will find numerous species of animals and birds here. The main fauna include hyena, leopard, jackal, fox, jungle cat, porcupine, four horned antelope spotted dear, wild bear, nilgai etc.

However one of the major attractions of the Sanctuary is the conspicuous flying squirrel, which can be observed gliding between the trees during night. Autumn is the best season to watch these creatures when the trees have shed their leaves.

DEOGARH
Located about 125 Kms from Chittorgarh is the famous 16th century fort near Pratapgarh. You can also see the ancient murals and Jain temple here.

MENAL
One of the famous picnic spot in this region Menal is located about 90 Kms from Chittorgarh on the Chittor-Bundi Road. 

Menal is also known as the "mini khajauraho" by the locals. The place is truly blessed with natural landscapes and beauty. The waterfalls are the main attractions here apart from famous for the ancient temples surrounded by lush green forests.

GOTMESHWAR
Gotmeshwar has an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is located about 130 Kms from Chittorgarh

JOGNIYA MATA JI TEMPLE
 The ancient temple built about 300 years ago is dedicated to Goddess Yogini

Jaisalmer was established by Rao Jaisal in 1156. Jaisalmer is located in the arid plains of west Rajasthan in the midst of the huge Thar Desert. The environment of western Rajasthan is harsh, semi desert and obtains very little rainfall. Jaisalmer is also known as ‘Golden City’.The main source of water was Gadisar Lake. Its golden, sand-coloured fortifications rising out of the infertile Thar like a scene from the Arabian Nights.

PLACES TO VISIT IN JAISALMER


JAISALMER FORT-The Rajput Ruler Rawal Jaiswal built this charming Fort in 1156 CE. The fort is 1,500 ft (460 m) extended and 750 ft (230 m) ample and is built on a mount that rises on top of a height of 250 ft (76 m). The fort has an original drainage system called the ghut nali which permit for the easy drainage of rainwater away from the fort in all four directions of the fort.


PATWON-KI-HAVELI- This is the biggest Haveli in Jaisalmer and stands in a narrow street.The Patwon Ji ki Haveli is a motivating part of Architecture and is the mainly significant among the havelis in Jaisalmer. A set of five houses adjoining to each other, constructed by five Jain brothers in the first half of the 19th century.

THE THAR HERITAGE MUSEUM- This is a great place for history fanatic who will love the artifacts preserved here. The museum also hosts a puppet show during evenings. This small but appealing museum is full of artifacts from the past period such as coins, manuscripts, photographs, weapons and old musical instruments.

GADISAR LAKE- Gadisar Lake is one of the most important tourist fascinations of Jaisalmer. Opposing to the popular faith, it is not an oasis but a water preservation tank completed around 1400 A.D. by the then maharaja of Jaisalmer, Maharwal Gadsi Singh. An attractive fact about this lake is that it’s never waterless (even though it’s in the middle of a desert) as it is fed by the Indira Gandhi Canal.


SAM SAND DUNES- There is a point in Thar Desert people go there for Desert Safari. That is why Sam sand dunes are becoming the major magnetism in Jaisalmer. In the month of February/March, this whole place turns into a cultural center. The desert festival organized among these dunes is the showcase of Rajasthani culture as a whole. Sam Sand Dunes Desert Camp also provides facilities of DJ every night with cultural show with snacks & bonfire.



HOW TO REACH JAISALMER

REACHING JAISALMER BY AIR- jaisalmer airport is positioned 5km from the city and is well connected by air with New Delhi, Jaipur and Jodhpur. Jodhpur Airport is the closest domestic airport distance of about 285 km.

REACHING JAISALMER BY TRAIN- The city station is 2 km east of the city. The city is well connected by rail with Jodhpur as well as other major cities of India including Agra, Jaipur, New Delhi and Mumbai. Some of the popular trains are Delhi Jaisalmer Express, Jodhpur Jaisalmer Express, Howrah Jaisalmer Express and Lalgarh Jaisalmer Special.

REACHING JAISALMER BY BUS- Roadways and private buses connect Jaisalmer to Jodhpur, Bikaner, Udaipur, Barmer and Jaipur. It is also linked to Ahmedabad and Bhuj in Gujarat. The two main bus stands in Jaisalmer are Golden Bus Terminal and Roadways. Some sleeper buses are also available from Jodhpur and Udaipur.

Udaipur is the one of the best places of tourist interest in India. It is small but beautiful city of Rajasthan. There are various name of this city some names are ‘The Venice of the Earth’, ‘The City of Lakes ‘Kashmir of Rajasthan. Maharaja Udai Singh II was the founder of Udaipur in 1559. There are many interesting places for tourist including beautiful Gardens, Lakes and palaces. Pichola Lake is the astonishing example of architect and also shows the culture of Rajasthan.

PLACES TO VISIT IN UDAIPUR

CITY PALACE- City Palace was built by Maharaja Udai Singh II in 1559. It is situated on the boundary of Lake Pichola. City Palace is a wonderful collection of Fountains, Courtyard, Corridors and Hanging gardens. In main gate we found first courtyard. It is very delightful to the Eyes. Its  timings are 9:30 a.m. To 5:30 p.m.

SAHELION-KI-BARI- It is very beautiful and prominent garden for the tourist in Udaipur. Tourist comes to visit here mainly. Rana Sangram Singh built this garden. Sahelion-Ki-Bari means Garden of the maidens. Here we found charming flowers, fountain shaped elephants, Lotus pool. Its timings are 10:00 a.m. To 4:00 p.m.

FATEH SAGAR LAKE- Fateh Sagar Lake is a second man-made Lake named after Maharana Fateh Singh. It is an awesome lake in Udaipur. Sight seen will be incomplete without tour to the artificial lake Fateh Sagar. It’s a dignity of the city of lakes of Udaipur .Opening and Closing timings are 9:00a.m. To 6:00p.m.



MOTI MAGRI- Moti Magri having a fascinating view of the Fateh Sagar Lake in the city of Udaipur, Rajasthan. Its reveal the remembrance of Rajput emperor Maharana Pratap. There are sculptures of Maharana Pratap with his loving horse ‘Chetak’. Fateh Sagar is close to Moti Mangri. 

LAKE PICHOLA- Lake Pichola is one of the attractive lakes. It is also a non-natural lake with clean and fresh water. People also use water for irrigation. It was formed in the year of 1362 AD by Banjara during the sovereignty of Maharana Lakha. It is accessible for the visitors. Later it was enlarged by Maharana Udai Singh.

REACHING UDAIPUR BY AIR- There is a Maharana Pratap Airport which is nearest airport in Udaipur. It is 20 k.m away from the city.
